High-Performance Computing Solutions
What is HPC?
HPC is a technology that leverages powerful parallel-processing clusters to process massive multi-dimensional datasets (Big Data) and solve complex problems at ultra-high speeds. HPC systems typically operate millions of times faster than the fastest desktop computers, laptops, or even server environments.
For decades, HPC was dominated by purpose-built supercomputers containing millions of processors or processor cores. Today, however, an increasing number of organizations are running HPC solutions on high-speed server clusters in on-premises data centers or in the cloud.
HOW DOES HPC WORK?
Standard computers process workloads primarily through serial computing—breaking tasks down into a sequence and executing them one by one on a single processor.
In contrast, HPC leverages:
Massively Parallel Processing (MPP): Parallel computing executes multiple tasks simultaneously across various servers or processors. Massively parallel processing refers to parallel computing that utilizes tens of thousands to millions of processors or processor cores.
Compute Clusters: An HPC cluster consists of multiple high-speed networked servers, managed by a centralized scheduler for parallel computing workloads. These computers—known as compute nodes—utilize high-performance multi-core CPUs or, increasingly, GPUs (graphics processing units), making them ideal for machine learning models and graphics-intensive tasks. An HPC cluster can comprise over 100,000 nodes.
High-Performance Components: All other computing resources within an HPC cluster—networking, memory, storage, and file systems—are high-speed, high-throughput, low-latency components synchronized with node processing speeds to optimize overall cluster computing power and performance.
