Collaborative Research Project: Convective Cold Pools and Hurricanes

The collaborative research project between ISCALE (led by Dr. Nguyen Dac Da), along with scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States and the University of Washington, has successfully concluded with notable results published in the Monthly Weather Review journal. Based on observational data from 241 tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic region from 1998 to 2023, the research team pioneered the description of convective cold pool spatial distribution in tropical cyclones and their critical role in storm energy balance. The study also highlights the necessity of incorporating convective cold pool dynamics into hurricane forecasting models to enhance intensity forecasting accuracy ..
